History

On a Sunday afternoon, September 22, 1957, St. Paul's Newman Center was officially dedicated by Most Reverend Hubert M. Newell, Bishop of Cheyenne.  The site for St. Paul's Newman Center was once a portion of the old Albany County Fair Grounds and is a few blocks east of what was the old Catholic hospital.  Funding for the construction was donated by the Diocese of Cheyenne, and the individual parishes throughout the state of Wyoming.

On September 1, 1959, St. Paul's Newman Center was canonically established as a parish and Bishop Hubert M. Newell appointed the first pastor.

Today, there are an estimated 1,309 Catholic students at the University of Wyoming and approximately 750 of these students participate in the ministry of the Newman Center.  Additionally, there are approximately 275 Catholic faculty and staff households as well as resident members from throughout the Laramie community.

The mission of our ministry is to form a faith community in the academic environment of the university.  We strive to achieve more ownership of their faith, facilitate decision-making based on Gospel values, make social justice an integral part of our community and promote full personal development while forming future leaders in our society and Church.

It is our goal to provide an environment where all members of our faith community, student, and resident, can be a more effective sign and instrument of the kingdom of peace, empowered by the Spirit to bring the light of the Gospel to our world.
