For many years, it was uncommon to be greeted at the door of any Catholic parish by a lay minister. This was a tradition that was found primarily in Protestant Churches. Prior to Vatican-II, there was only a scant mention among the other instructions about liturgical ministers which stated “those who, in some places, meet the faithful at the church entrance, lead them to appropriate places, and direct processions,” but no name was given to this ministry.
However, in 2003, when the Introduction to the Order of Mass was published, ushers are assigned the task of “welcoming people at the door, providing them with all necessary books and aids, and helping them find their places.”
Here at St. Paul’s Newman Center, one of the qualities we take great pride in, is a reputation of welcome. And, our Hospitality Ministers are on the front line of this task, welcoming both new and familiar faces into Liturgy each week.

Hospitality Ministers will be trained in the practicalities of their ministry, which include not only greeting new and old friends prior to Liturgy, but also assisting during the Mass as our gifts are gathered, and brought forward to the altar. You will be added to a rotating schedule that fits with your family’s normal Liturgy attendance time.
If you feel called to serve our community as a Hospitality Minister, please contact Keith and Jeanne Kennedy
