Brief
History
Thanks to the efforts of Father Michael J. McGiveny,
assist and
pastor
of St.
Mary's
Church
in New
Haven
and some
of his
parishioners,
the
Connecticut
state
legislature
on March
29,
1882,
officially
chartered
the
Knight
of
Columbus
as a
fraternal
benefit
society.
The
Orders
is still
true to
its
founding
principles
of
charity,
unity,
and
fraternity.
The Knights was formed to render financial aid to
members
of their
families.
Mutual
aid and
assistance
are
offered
to sick,
disabled
and
needy
member
and
their
families.
Social
and
intellectual
fellowship
is
promoted
among
members
and
their
families
through
educational,
charitable,
religious,
social
welfare,
war
relief,
and
public
relief
works.
The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members
in one
council
to more
than
13,000
councils
and 1.7
million
members
through
the
United
States
and the
world.
About
College
Councils
College Knights are full members of the Order, having
all the
rights,
privileges
and
responsibilities
therein.
College
Knights
belong
to units
called
College
Councils.
The only
difference
between
the
college
council
and any
other
local
council
is that
college
councils
are
located
on
college
or
university
campuses.
Today
there
are more
that
16,000
college
Knights
and 160
college
councils
in the
United
States,
Canada
and the
Philippines.
Education enhanced by the spirit of the Catholic
fraternity
makes
the
college
council
program
both an
asset to
Columbianism
and a
valuable
resource
for
continued
growth
of the
Knights
of
Columbus.
College
council
membership
involves
students,
faculty
and
people
from the
parish.
This
gives
them a
broad
range of
ideas
for
programs
that
benefit
both the
campus
and the
community
at
large.
